General Description

 

The Missionary Pilot will prepare and implement an annual mission and ministry plan in consultation with the Director of Ministry and Discipleship for the area of ministry to which the Missionary Pilot is called.  Plans will be developed in keeping with the mission and vision of the organization, and in accordance with current priorities and objectives as set forth by the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots, U.S.  The priority of the Missionary Pilot will be the identification, recruitment, equipping, training and empowerment of indigenous leadership for ministry.  The Missionary Pilot, while required to work independently and on a self-directed basis, is an integral part of the ministry team and will reflect a commitment to the Mission and Vision of the organization, as well as professionalism and a spirit of cooperation with other members of the ministry staff.

Responsibilities:

1. Prepare and implement an annual ministry plan in consultation with the Director of Ministry and Discipleship that includes annual goals and objectives for ministry contacts, program implementation, areas served and coordination of volunteer participation.

2. Prepare and work within an annual budget to adequately carry out the approved ministry plan.

3.  Prepare and maintain a current list of communities served, providing monthly reports on ministry and flight activities, numbers of adults and children served, and progress toward annual goals and objectives.

4.  Initiate contact and develop relationships with American Indian, Native Alaskan and First Nations people in those areas/communities where there is no active Christian ministry, listening to and interpreting their needs for the purpose of developing indigenous leadership.

5.  Provide opportunities to study God’s Word in a culturally sensitive manner in home or group settings, identifying potential prospective leaders who are accepted by those participating, and beginning a process of training such leaders with the goal of entrusting, at the earliest possible opportunity, the leadership of the study into the hands of the local leader(s).

6.  Provide leadership and theological formation studies to further equip, train and empower indigenous leaders for personal growth and development of their ministry, encouraging participation in the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT) and Theological Education For Emerging Ministries (TEEM) programs as appropriate.

7.  Serve as a resource to the indigenous people and leaders in ministry for the development of projects and programs to meet basic needs of the community – a holistic ministry to body and soul.

8. Minister to and with Lutherans in the area served who are not affiliated with a Lutheran congregation, and while remaining faithful to the Scriptures and Lutheran Confessions, provide an interdenominational presence to all Christians in isolated places where location precludes support from their own denomination, and reach out with the Gospel to the unchurched at every opportunity.

9.  Work together with other denominational leadership as appropriate in communities where other denominations are engaged in ministry efforts, being supportive of such ministry, especially the equipping, training and encouraging of indigenous leadership.

10.  Know and operate within the policies and procedures of the Flight Operations Manual of the Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots, U.S.

11.  Maintain the airworthiness and cleanliness of the aircraft assigned to your ministry.

12.  Represent the organization as needed at congregations, church conferences, conventions and/or assemblies, and participate as appropriate in other ministry related meetings and events.

13.  Attend and participate in appropriate meetings of the organization as agreed upon with the Director of Ministry and Discipleship.

14.  Assist in organizational efforts to build relationships with donors by providing ministry photos and writing articles for publication, devotional materials, letters to supporters and other materials as appropriate.

15.  Assist in the coordination, equipping, training and support of individual volunteers for ministry and other activities in accordance with planned strategies.

Prerequisites: 

  • a positive faith witness and commitment to serve the Lord Jesus Christ;
  • a passion for Native American / Native Alaskan / First Nations ministries;
  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field of study;
  • preferred Ordained Lutheran Pastor or Licensed Lay Worker;
  • commercial airplane multi-engine land credentials with instrument rating and minimum of 500 hours including minimum 50 hours Alaska time;
  • First Class FAA Medical Certificate;
  • preferred Certified Flight Instructor Rating;
  • excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills;
  • ability to serve as an articulate, enthusiastic and visible representative of the ministry;
  • knowledge of and sensitivity to church polity and structure particularly in the Lutheran Church.
